Does a Mouse Jiggler Work With the Laptop Closed?

Usually not. Closing the lid puts most laptops to sleep, and a sleeping computer runs nothing, so the jiggler stops and Slack and Teams show you as away or offline. The exceptions are a Mac in closed-display mode and a Windows laptop set to do nothing when the lid closes. Here is how each works and what it costs you.

Why closing the lid ends the jiggling

A jiggler, software or USB, works by making the computer see input. When the laptop sleeps, apps stop, the network connection drops and nothing is reading input, so Slack and Teams lose their connection and show you away or offline.

A keep-awake tool such as caffeinate does not change that on a MacBook: closing the lid still puts it to sleep.

Mac: closed-display (clamshell) mode

A MacBook stays awake with the lid closed only in closed-display mode: connected to power, with an external display and an external keyboard or mouse. That is a desk setup, not a laptop in a bag.

Some third-party keep-awake apps offer a closed-lid option. Read the app’s own documentation for its limits, and watch heat and battery.

Windows: what closing the lid does

Windows lets you choose what closing the lid does, separately on battery and plugged in: Do nothing, Sleep, Hibernate or Shut down. The usual default is Sleep. In Windows 11 the setting is under Settings, System, Power & battery, Lid & power button controls; in Control Panel it is Power Options, Choose what closing the lid does.

With Do nothing, the laptop keeps running and a software jiggler keeps running too. The cost: a running laptop in a bag gets hot and drains its battery, and on many work laptops IT manages the power and lock settings, so you cannot change them.

What still goes wrong with the lid closed

Locking still wins. If your computer locks, Teams shows Away whatever the jiggler does. Wi‑Fi and VPN connections can drop while the laptop is in a bag, and your phone shows its own status.

Your organization may also have rules about simulated input; check them before you rely on any jiggler.

Staying online with the laptop actually closed

OnlineHours keeps Slack, ClickUp and Microsoft Teams online during the hours you choose, from its own servers, so your laptop can be closed. Slack and ClickUp connect with a private code from the free OnlineHours Connector; Teams connects through the Teams Connector, recommended for Teams in your browser, or Microsoft sign-in for work accounts. Plans start at $3.49 a month for Slack and $3.99 for Teams or ClickUp, $29.99 a year for one app, or $9.99 a month for all three, with a 7-day trial for one app and no card.

Because the status comes from our servers, nothing has to stay awake: see online with the laptop closed, or setup for Slack and Teams. The trade-offs against a jiggler are in mouse jiggler alternative.

Keep your status on your hours, laptop closed

OnlineHours sets Slack, Teams or ClickUp to online from its servers during the hours you choose, and stops outside them.

If your computer stays on at a desk, a jiggler may be all you need. OnlineHours covers Slack, Teams and ClickUp during your hours with the laptop shut and packed away.

One app, no card. Nothing is charged when it ends.

Common questions

Does a USB mouse jiggler work with the lid closed?

Only if the computer keeps running with the lid closed. Once the laptop sleeps, there is nothing left for the jiggler to keep active.

Will Slack stay active if I close my laptop?

Not from the laptop: it sleeps and Slack shows you away. A server-based schedule can keep Slack active during your hours with the laptop closed.

Is it fine to leave a running laptop in a bag?

It has little airflow there and can get hot, and the battery drains faster. If you set Windows to do nothing when the lid closes, take the laptop out of the bag or let it sleep.
